Janine has kindly summarised our September meeting in today’s blog post:
On Tuesday September 20, eight members of The Woldingham Writers’ Group gathered around a dining table in an elegant home. The hospitality was tempting and generous.
Business items were swiftly moved forward: renewing membership of NAWG and investigating ways of publishing and printing the TWWG Collection of works by members.
All too quickly, for some, we moved on to review the three poems that had been submitted by TWWG. A subject, ‘Place’, had been set by Sophie Guest. All three poems offered very different approaches to the subject. A common theme seemed to emerge: sentimental reflection, childhood, memories and more. Some with an urge to be Virginia Woolf-esque, needed help with punctuation for emphasis and flow; others were urged to build on clever rhymes and rhythms and imagery.
The reviews/critiques were generous, intelligent, appropriate and thought provoking for the authors and hopefully the audience present enjoyed the discussion and the revelations that came in explanation of the whys and wherefores of the poems. There was a happy discussion about poetry and helpful tips about narration and points of view in more narrative forms. One never leaves a TWWG meeting without being inspired and learning a lot.
Discussion on the progress of works, for the proposed TWWG collection, rounded off the evening and we agreed to meet in October, the second Tuesday to be precise. Venue TBA.
